So today I went for a drive on a 1 series BMW. It was raining, so I decided to take a one way road to have some fun. On a curve I decided to drift the car, so I downshifted, turned a little bit and gave it some gas. Only one wheel starts to spin and revs go up to about 5k. And that is with new tires.

Video semi related: 100k+ BMW Alpina doing a one wheel peel.

I'm sorry that you lack the ability to get an open diff car sideways.

I've done it before, but it is just so unpredictable. Sometimes it will start to oversteer and sometimes it will not.

It begs for limited slip. Begs.

Oversteer and understeer is usually independent of the powertrain or differential settings, what you're describing is that it understeers until it powerslides, but that transition isn't predictable.

I wonder if the traction control (a lot of cars won't let you turn stability control totally off) and suspension have more to do with it than the differential.

I love your long posts. It doesn't understeer, it just doesn't want to start to power slide just by using the accelerator because it sends most of the torque to one wheel only. It mainly happens at low speeds. Of course I could kick the clutch if I really wanted it to start to oversteer. I have also noticed it is easier to drift it in a banked curve.

On the BMW I drove you can turn all electronic aids off, with the exception of ABS. All BMWs, with the exception of M Cars, have open diffs. Recent BMWs simulate an LSD with traction control, even when every aid is off. Sadly the one I drove does not do that.

$100k and no LSD? Are you fucking kidding me?

Gotta use that weight transfer

v6 variants of muscle cars would get so much more rep (or at least some) if they just came with simple factory LSDs

It is just typical euro/jap fanboys that say LOL CAN'T TURN that do not respect modern 300+ hp V6 american RWD cars. The 2011+ V6 Mustang comes standard with an LSD, so does the 2010+ V6 Camaro.

Fairly certain the '15 Mustang's v6 is losing LSD options altogether, push budget performance folk to the boost4. What a shame, I like Ford's 3.7

Where did you read that? I don't think Ford would abandon the LSD on the V6.

Couldn't remember where, so I went to the mustang Build page. GT comes with an LSD standard, optional for the Ecoboost, and completely absent for the V6. In fact, no performance packages at all for the V6, not even a halfhearted track pack

I call it getting squirrley, cause like you said its so unpredictable.

I can get my 335d sideways pretty predictably, and it's an automatic. It also has 425 lb.ft. of torque so that helps.

Very weird.

NO LSD = Car is much easier to handle when it fishtails, it will only really fishtail one direction.

LSD = much more grip and generally harder to handle when it fishtails, depending on the car and driver can be put into tank slappers, you can't do that w no lsd.

Your 335d has the eLSD even when the DSC is fully off. That helps a lot. Nice oil burner.

My experience is exactly the opposite of yours. From which car/cars are you talking about?

Many cars. Cars with no lsd have been miata, old mustang etc, cars with lsd have been aplenty, from m3's, to mustangs to camaros rx7 bla blah and a lot of other cars all short of really expensive cars.

I would agree the e92 m3 for example is an exception to this rule. It has an lsd, but it's made to be very friendly to the driver by having elsd. I was definitely talking more along the lines of traditional lsd, and cars that came with and without (think old cars).

A miata or a boxter with a lsd vs. without is much easier to drift and slide the car without the lsd.
